Wow! It's already February....it seems like the month of January went by fast! ÃƒÆ’ƒÂ°Ã…¸ËœÃ†Ã¢â‚¬â„¢

And it turned out to be a good month, especially toward the end for many of our traders here as markets grew more volatile due to the CoronaVirus but also many other issues in the news like slowing factory PMI's and the Impeachment trial as well as the Iowa Caucuses....just a lot of news and uncertainty right now for the markets to digest!

But uncertainty creates VOLATILITY and for many traders, volatility is their friend! ÃƒÆ’ƒÂ°Ã…¸Ëœâ€°

Say, I want to thank everyone fot the participation as it was really good in January!....we saw 85% more posts in January on this board than we saw in December....and about 30% more views on this board!....I get a special report from the host administrator and it shows the number of eyeballs on the FORUM in total was the best since last October....great to see the increased activity and hope to see it continue and grow! Also, thanks to SM and Slammin' Sam who continue to draw a lot of eyeballs to their boards here on the Forum! And of course, special thanks to LittleShark who kept this Forum alive when there were few others around! Quite frankly, without LilShark's efforts and advice during the dark days of this forum, I might have shut it down long ago. ÃƒÆ’ƒÂ°Ã…¸ËœÅ

Check last months board for what was added before this months board started ... I requested your guys advice there for next week plays ...

Hi Ace ,,, if you had shut it down ,,, i wouldn't have learned much & probably wouldn't be trading stocks any more ... now I have at least some chance to trade as extra retirement income ,,, if i can keep the current gains coming ... if China's stock market re-opens & crashes Monday and next week ,,, then that could be a VERY BIG turning point for my portfolio ,,, with 8 FXI PUT contracts in play now ...

the forum is nice now ,,, new members would be nice if they are nice ... guys ,,, invite a friend or relative ,,, if you have some that like to trade stocks etc. ...

If you guys have young kids ,,, or grand kids ,,, and extra money ,,, one way to teach them stock investing & trading ,,, would be to have each of them open their own trading account & you fund it with say $500 & then you trade it for them ,,, as they watch the trades you do ,,, to learn what TA is all about ... ,,, ... some of them will call you or post to you asking questions ,,, and you will become much closer to your grand kids as repayment for your time and money spent ...

WOW ! ~ wouldn't that be a nice addition to the forum here ~ if those grand kids became involved and asked questions here .. heck ,,, some of them might teach us a thing or two ...

At the very least ,,, each of us should sent a little note with the Forum address to our kids ~ grand kids ~ niece & nephews ,,, inviting them to visit here to let hem see what the possibilities of trading are ...

The Wuhan CoronaVirus has suddenly become THE STORY for traders and investors....over-shadowing the Impeachment trial of a president and even BREXIT (yep. that happened this morning and hardly anyone noticed!!!).... ÃƒÆ’ƒÆ’°Å¸ËœÂ³

And the poster-child for the CoronaVirus has been this little stock with symbol NNVC....I still don't understand the fascination with this small biotech?....It has greatly out-performed the other anti-virals like NVAX, BCRX, MRNA, INO, RHHBY and others....😷

CMAC38 had convinced me to take a try with it a few months ago and so I grabbed 200 shares of it at a pretty cheap price (around $2-and-change,  I think), but then they released bad news on one of their FDA trials, and the stock plummeted and I bailed....quite frankly, I had not done my homework on it....took a small hit (but quickly recovered with other good trades).....only later to realize that if I had held those 200 shares I might have made a small fortune with the CoronaVirus....go figure! Lol. ðŸ˜„

Even so, I still don't understand the fascination with this stock...I have seen the CEO on TV and he sounds to me like a sham! This stock is mostly based on conjecture about what they are gonna do in fighting the CoronaVirus, while stocks like MRNA which has the inside track with the US government's CDC seems to be barely noticed by traders....

But congrats to our UNUNVER !!! who has traded this NNVC to great profits!!! Even though I don't understand it, what matters is how traders can turn a profit even from questionable stocks like this.He realized this stock had become a cult stock and was attracting FOMO action from traders far and wide! ÃƒÆ’ƒÆ’°Å¸Ëœâ€°

@Littleshark I'm going to spend some time looking at charts again tonight.  I'll post up anything I find particularly interesting.  Expecting gap down Monday am due to forced margin selling, w/ a bounce somewhere Monday/Tuesday.  I'm still holding my core positions (SQQQ, SPXU, SOXS) SOXS is green, SPXU green, SQQQ flat.  Out of TVIX friday afternoon.  Looking to reenter TVIX on a bounce.

For what ever it is worth, I posted this to TWTR earlier today.

$SPX intermediate trend is down. a) I would encourage traders to give the market time to digest and discount this exogenous event. b) recognize that margin selling is going to exacerbate the down move early next week. Top likely not in, BUT be patient looking for a bottom.

LittleShark......I will take a look at the last posts on the January board,...and highly recommend that others do too!

One thing I would like to point out is that the ISM Manufacturing Report will come out Monday at 10 am ET...this report has skidded into a RECESSIONARY stance the last few months....and the Chicago PMI came out on Friday and it was another bad miss, and as I have stated before, the Chicago report often offers a good clue to the national report....so, I don't think that report will be too good on Monday morning. so even if the markets are trying to bounce on Monday morning, the SELLERS may step back in at 10 am on Monday...and quash any relief rally on Monday!

NYSE Advance-Decline Line is warning of a possible correction...!

ACE, IMO your NNVC assumptions are very accurate. They don't even have a product in Phase 1 yet. It is the extremely low float that is allowing for and creating the volatility.
There was also a finely executed short squeeze.  All IMO only.
It is also one of the weakest companies you find in the space, with no actual progress in development out of  a product out of animal trials. Years of losses and a CEO that has received an average $730,000 in total compensation over the last 3 years.  1.69% institutional ownership.
Your instincts are correct IMO.
Just an opinion as scalping has produced nice profits. Hold to long and it may be years to recovery if at all.

Is the CoronaVirus that scary??? Some people say the common flu kills way more people than the Corona.....🙄

So, the latest figures show that 6,600 people have died this flu season from the common flu (H1N1 virus)....well, that's way more than 250 people who have been killed by the CoronaVirus! So, what's the big deal? ÃƒÆ’ƒÆ’ƒÃ‚°Ã…¸Ëœ

Well, those people are ignoring the critical data....we need to dig deeper to understand how scary the Corona Virus is...keep in mind that the Corona is a very NEW virus and it has not had time yet to spread far and wide like the common flu virus has done....So, a lot of people have not yet encountered this new virus...and our immune systems are not possibly ready to handle this new virus! In fact, the Corona is a different type of virus from the common one, and so many peoples' immune systems will not know how to handle it...

So, here is a better comparison between these two flu bugs....

The common flu has infected 13 million people and it has led to 120.000 hospitalizations so far...and as stated above, it has led to 6,600 deaths....that's a lot of pain and suffering, to be sure! ÃƒÆ’ƒÆ’ƒÃ‚°Ã…¸Ëœ³

On the other hand, the CoronaVirus has only been confirmed in 11,791 people and has caused CRITICAL ILLNESS in about 18% of the cases...or about 2,122 critically ill patients that we know of...and 259 deaths....so, on the surface, this novel virus doesn't seem to compare to the common flu in sheer numbers....

But it's the RATE of sickness and death that we need to compare....not total numbers...to understand how deadly this new virus is...

So, if you take a calculator and figure out the percentages, then the CoronaVirus turns out to be more devastating a flu bug than the common flu....

COMMON FLU CRITICAL ILLNESS RATE:  120,000 hospitalizations/ 13,000,000 infections = 0.9% critical illness rate (about 1 out of 1,000 people become critically ill)
COMMON FLU DEATH RATE: 6,600 deaths/ 13,000,000 infections = 0.05% death rate (about 5 of every 10,000 people die) ÃƒÆ’ƒÆ’°Å¸ËœÂ·

CORONA VIRUS CRITICAL ILLNESS RATE: 2,122 critical illness / 11,791 infections = 18% critical illness rate (about 18% or roughly 1 out of every 5 people become critically ill)
CORONA VIRUS DEATH RATE: 259 deaths/ 11,791 infections = 2.1%  death rate (about 1 out of every 50 people die and this could get worse due to the lag effect) ÃƒÆ’ƒÆ’°Å¸ËœÂ·

Note: I assume that "critical illness" is someone who needs hospitalization. Most of the time, it would.

Now, let's compare the rates to each other, and once we do this, we should see there is NO close comparison! The CoronaVirus is a much more dangerous virus than the common flu bug is! ÃƒÆ’ƒÆ’°Å¸ËœÂ±

The CoronaVirus causes 20 times more hospitalizations than does the common flu!  ( 18% critical illness rate/ 0.9% rate for common flu= 20) ÃƒÆ’ƒÂ°Ã…¸ËœÂ³
The CoronaVirus is 42 times more deadly than is the common flu ( that's 2.1% death rate/ 0.05% death rate for common flu = 42)  ÃƒÆ’ƒÂ°Ã…¸ËœÂ±

There simply is NO comparison between the two! Also, as I have warned before, the death rate is a lagging number....it takes time for the disease to manifest itself in each person...so, the death rate should increase once this lag is accounted for-- people who have just gotten sick today or even last week are not yet at the point of death--this is called "the lag rate"  ....and we are also learning that there are NOT enough test kits in China to diagnose many people, so it's estimated that there many thousands of cases that have not been confirmed due to lack of test kits.

Then, we must also consider that some people don't show symptoms for a number of days and they may be transmitting this flu bug to others undetected...in other words, things are going to get a lot worse before they get better! IMHO!

Thanks for the reply ,,, down at the open on Monday will make me 😊 ,,, then the challenge will be to know how long to hold the FXI PUTs for max gain & when to take the money and run ...

How i solved that problem last week was ,,, I sold to take profits when my FXI OTM PUTs became two or three levels ITM ... and then I turned around and bought the new lower priced OTM PUT ... and waited for FXI price to fall more to move my new OTM PUT to ITM level ... seemed to work good ... as profits were in the dry powder barrel ... only used the recovered principal $$$ to buy the new lower priced PUTs ...

I charted your plays just now ,,, I can't afford to buy them ,,, later ,,, when i have my broker site open ,,, I will look to see if they have options to trade and how the prices compare ...  one thing that i liked about FXI is that the PUT options don't cost much ,,, so i could afford them with my small dry powder barrel ...

If you didn't look at my post on Jan. board ,,, click through the Market charts slide show ,,, will only take a minute ... to see how each market is progressing at a different pace ... but all in the same direction down now ...

Its been a while since people have been quarantined -> IN THE USA.   Also, how long since airlines completely shutdown flights to a country.

The jet that carried the diplomats from Woohan, China to Anchorage and then on to Riverside - remember that?  They are all quarantined on an army base - base barracks - in Riverside - for ~2 weeks per the incubation period.
I think 18% very sick or dead has got the attention of CDC, WHO and governments.

in a city of 11million ,,, how many more are sick at home for the same reason & not included in the official count ?

and ,,, the report that some Chinese are upset ,,, because their relatives that died from Coronavirus have cause of death on the death certificate listed as pneumonia ...

are they also not counted then in the official Coronavirus death count ? ...

me thinks the "official" numbers are way lower then the actual numbers ...

Oh ,,, I almost forgot ,,, what about all those people who got into the hospital ,, but then they were told that they ran out of test kits ,, so they can't test them for the virus .. .and the rules from the China leaders in Beijing say that they can't give them a hospital bed unless they test positive ... no test kits available ='s you don't get in the hospital either ='s you go home and be sick there ,,, so not in the "official" count again ...

Ascertainment % is 18% very sick and deceased.
~5% ascertainment typically - from Doc's chart in Jan

So, yes, could be much worse - apparently over one hundred thousand are being monitored due to exposure, symptoms, etc.

Senator Tom Cotton Shreds China's Official Virus Story, Warns Of "Super Laboratory" Proximity

A United States senator is casting major doubt on the Chinese government’s official story on the 2019 novel coronavirus outbreak, instead hinting that a biosafety laboratory working with the deadliest pathogens in the world could be the true source."

I've also read that the market was not the source in January since infections were all the way back in December.
Likely it was a place a carrier of the virus visited and infected.
But also, the lab is 20 miles away.   That's a 20 min ride by train for some wild game - easy.   Who doesn't go 20 miles for a good meal?

Very interesting that the military corralled the jet full of US diplomats and family that came from Wuhan at a military base.

A little heads up guys >>>

UPS cancelled 22 cargo flights from China ~ they don't want to go to China to pick up product ...

if supplies from China stop flowing into the USA ...

then store shelves are going to start to get empty ...

and we know when supply gets tight ...

prices go up ,,, price gouging etc. ...

so i asked my daughter to pick up some staple items for me like extra big packs of toilet paper ,,, cling wrap ,,, etc. ,,, house hold items that i will need some day ,,, even though I don't need them now ... i will send her a check ,,, and then pick them up from her house next time I travel down there ...

i suspect that prices a month from now may be higher ,,, maybe a lot higher if supplies are not coming into the USA as fast as they used to do ...

Hey SHARK....

On the last page of the January board, you  asked the following question:

So ~ for RIGHT NOW ~ is COMPQ the one to short with PUTs or otherwise ? ,,, since it hasn't fell as much yet ,,, so PUTs may still be comparatively cheap yet ,,, but COMPQ most likely (ODDS) will follow the others down ... ,,, ...  someone please tell me ,,, what are the symbols to go short or ultra short the COMPQ ?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SHARK....for me the answer is SIMPLE....go with buying a put on QQQ....that's usually what I do when I want to short the COMPQ....QQQ gets you pretty darn close to that index...and when QQQ drops, you can score some pretty nice coin! Usually, the puts on QQQ are not too richly valued, because most traders like to bet the Q's going long (in other words, the calls are usually worth more than the puts)....I have fooled around with the exotic stuff like QID calls before (QID is an ultra levered ETF for Nasdaq stocks)...but the problem with the QID and most levered ETFs is the bid/ask spread is often wide and the trades seem somewhat illiquid....and the premiums can be pricy because the levered ETFs have greater implied volatility to them....

With QQQ, the puts trade tightly on the bid/ask and that usually allows me to execute a trade quickly and close to or on target....only SPY seems to have tighter spreads than QQQ...

I just shorted it last weekend as a matter of fact...I bought 1 put on Friday afternoon just minutes before the close and I sold it the following Monday just 10 minutes after the open.. so when measured by the time that the Options Market was open, I literally only held the put for 3 minutes on Friday and less than 10 minutes the very next morning....and I made $262.95 Net Profit after stripping out commissions costs....not bad for an overnight hold (well, an over the weekend hold if one wants to get picky!!)

Here's the actual trade from my broker account:

Search results for 1/18/2020 to 2/1/2020

Date/Time [sort_up]

Description

Amount [clear]

Commission [clear]

Reg Fee [clear]

Net Cash Balance

 01/24/2020  15:56:22 Bought 1 QQQ Feb 7 2020 222.5 Put @ 2.86

 -286.52 0.50 0.02 ---

 01/27/2020  09:39:51 Sold 1 QQQ Feb 7 2020 222.5 Put @ 5.5

 549.47 0.50 0.03 ---

So, $549.47 - $286.52 = $262.95 profit  Ã°Å¸Ëœâ€°

In fact, my returns with shorting QQQ (or SPY) have often returned better results than the Vixens...not always, but sometimes that happens.I hope this helps. On that same weekend, I had UVXY too, but I actually made more money with this one QQQ put than i made on UVXY.....

Careful guys with the SQQQ puts, IMO. The fact its lagging is indicative to me. I smell a nasty bounce coming. Not going to front run it, but #PPT is watching and waiting I'm sure.

Japan Set To Release 1.2 Million Tons Of Radioactive Fukushima Water Into Ocean, Causing "Immeasurable Damage"

Just in case a global viral pandemic, whose sources are still unclear and apparently now include human feces, wasn't enough, the global outrage meter is about to go "up to eleven" with Japan now set to flood the world's oceans with radioactive water.

In a move that will surely prompt a furious response from Greta Thunberg's ghost writers (unless of course it doesn't fit a very narrow agenda), a panel of experts advising Japan’s government on a disposal method for the millions of tons of radioactive water from the destroyed Fukushima nuclear plant on Friday recommended releasing it into the ocean. And, as Reuters notes, based on past practice it is likely the government will accept the recommendation.

Tokyo Electric, or Tepco, has collected nearly 1.2 million tonnes of contaminated water from the cooling pipes used to keep fuel cores from melting since the plant was crippled by an earthquake and tsunami in 2011. The water is stored in huge tanks that crowd the site.
