Hey, Happy New Year to you too, Doc....!

I am not sure where your image went, but no problem....

Say, I am starting to become a convert....I am not totally tossing in the towel yet, but I do think that this global climate change thing is gaining strength, which is contrary to my previous opinions....

Occasionally, I plan to post some pertinent stories about CLIMATE CHANGE as I think it is also becoming a factor in stock trading....for instance, many of the fossil fuel stocks seem to be attracting less investment dollars while many of the new energy companies like the electric car manufacturers seem to be attracting greater attention...so, whether one wants to believe that Climate Change is real or not, it can't be denied that it's starting to affect the way some industry sectors trade, imho....

And some public companies are focused on finding ways to reduce the carbon footprint, and these stocks may well attract more capital...they are known to be part of an investment thesis called. "ESG" which stands for Environmental, Social and Governance....stocks like ERII, FCEL, PLUG and TSLA would fall under the Environmental part of this category...indeed, I am planning to create a (private) list of stocks that trade under environmental concerns among my lists at http://www.stockcharts.com so that I can find them more easily....

Now, I know the Washington Post has been accused of being a fake news outlet (after all, it's owned by Jeff Bezos whom Trump despises), but they do have a very interesting and disturbing story out about the vanishing kelp beds off Australia's southern coast which can carry huge implications for life as we know it....

2020's Key Global Events: A Calendar For The Year Ahead

January

  • Wednesday, January 1: - Terms of newly appointed ECB Executive Board Members Panetta and Schnabel begin.
  • January: US-China - Potential signing of Phase One trade agreement. Following the announcement on December 13 of a Phase One trade agreement, the US and China could finalize and sign the agreement.
  • January: Thailand - Readings of the FY2020 budget in Parliament.
  • Thursday, January 9: France - Pension reform negotiations. Start of the second round of negotiations between the government and trade unions on the pension reform.
  • Tuesday, January 14: United States - Comments due on proposed tariffs on imports from France. The US Trade Representative proposed tariffs on imports from France as part of a Section 301 investigation into France's digital services tax. Final comments are due on January 14, at which point the USTR could announce a decision on how it is moving forward with the issue.
  • Monday, January 20: EU - EU Commission to review EU fiscal framework.
  • Monday, January 20-21: Japan - BoJ monetary policy meeting.
  • Thursday, January 23: EU - ECB Governing Council meeting.
  • Sunday, January 26: Peru — Extraordinary Congressional Election. Peruvians will elect new members of Congress for all 130 congressional seats, whose terms will end in July 2021.
  • Wednesday, January 29: United States - FOMC meeting statement.
  • Thursday, January 30: UK - BoE MPC meeting (and monetary policy report).
  • Friday, January 31: UK - Article 50 extension ends under current legislation. On current legislation, the UK’s latest Article 50 extension ends on this date. Given that MPs in the House of Commons have already passed the second reading of PM Johnson’s Withdrawal Agreement Bill, we expect domestic ratification of the terms of the UK’s exit from the EU to be completed well in advance of 31 January. On that basis, the UK will have formally left the EU (on the status quo terms embodied in the post-Brexit transition period) as of 1 February.

The Fed's "Not-QE" & The $33 Trillion Stock Market In Three Charts

The nearly invisible thin red line is $60 billion in relation to $33 trillion. So exactly how does this signal-noise sum translate into "the Fed has our backs"?

https://zh-prod-1cc738ca-7d3b-4a72-b792-20bd8d8fa069.storage.googleapis.com/s3fs-public/styles/inline_image_desktop/public/inline-images/fed-stocks2.png?itok=gPgp-kbM

[fed-stocks2]

But wait, you say; it's not the monthly total that counts, it's the annual total of Fed money-printing that counts. Your wish is my command: the second chart plots the relative size of $60B X 12 = $720 billion, should the Fed extend "Not-QE" for an entire year, compared to the $33 trillion U.S. stock market.

Hmm, $720 billion isn't very much compared to the stock market. This raises the same question: how much direct control does the Fed have on U.S. stocks?
